Alorton, IL

Alorton, Illinois, is a town in Saint Clair County with multiple identities. In its early days, it was known as Alcoa. It wasn't fond of sharing its name with the aluminum industry giant of the same name, however, so it changed its name to Alorton in 1945. It's still a small village, but it is also a bigger city nowadays. Alorton changed again when it merged with two other neighboring villages in 2021, Cahokia and Centreville, to become Cahokia Heights officially. The merger was part of the local government's Better Together campaign, and if you spend time here, you'll agree that it is precisely that. The Alorton community itself is peaceful, quiet, and a lovely place to live. A wealth of attractions and activities also surrounds it, so its residents enjoy the best of both worlds, small-town life with big-city conveniences. The mighty Mississippi River borders the county, and Alorton is just a few minutes away from the bustling St. Louis, Missouri, metro area.

For some outdoor excitement, go inside the Bonne Terre Mines. It's an old, abandoned gold mine that flooded back in the 1960s, and now it's a premier local tourist destination. You can tour the mine, take a boat tour, and even scuba dive through its incredible passageways.

Do some ghost-hunting at the Cahokia Mounds, an ancient Native American burial ground with some spectacular formations and some spectral ones, too. Visitors claim the site is very haunted. Another intriguing, haunted site you might want to check out is the Lemp Mansion. It's a B&B where a ghost is known to play the piano.

Catch a ballgame or an event at GCS Ballpark. If you like baseball, this is one of the nicest venues in Illinois. It's home to the Gateway Grizzlies, and fans say there isn't a bad seat in the house. Speaking of gateways, if you want to see one of the world's most incredible feats of architecture, don't miss the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. You can take a tram ride to the top and tour the museum, which features interactive displays celebrating America's pioneer days.

Eating in the Alorton area is just as much fun as sightseeing. Head on over to the Hofbräuhaus in Belleville for some incredible German food. The beer is made in-house. Or grab the best Italian sandwich west of the Mississippi at Gioia's Deli. And don't forget to try the area's famous barbeque, too. Pappy's Smokehouse serves up some of the best St. Louis-style ribs in town. Lastly, if you're craving something sweet, you cannot go wrong with the irresistible pastry creations at Kruta Bakery in Collinsville. The pictures on their website alone are enough to make you jump in the car.
